I think I now own my dream deck, a Sims Taperkick.
When I was young though I was a big Union Airflow fan. They were a local shop deck.
I had so many dream decks, That foam Kryptonic deck was one of them also..
Wheels:
65mm blue Kryptonics, Belair, bones.... UFO's on my slalom board.
German bearings of course.....
Trucks:
Tracker trucks (The first truly modern truck),1st gen Indy's,
and that old set of gold gullwing slit axles I had on my slalom deck.
I'm sure I am forgetting something.... but hey, that's part of getting old huh?

76-79 I still think about those days.
Low point NOW. I hate to say this but STREETSKATING has just about put me off from skateboarding. I mean how many time do we have to watch a guy slide his board down a set of handrails? The magazines suck. Just the same old street crap. Whatever happened to pools? I'm going to build my own ramp because I get so sick of the same old ollie scene.

I've had the pleasure of owning and riding this board,and it stayed reasonably intact for eight years. '79 Kryptonics 8.5x30 Foam warptail,Tracker Fulltracks(I still ride 'em)and three sets of wheels for it,all Krypto C-Series,65mm Greens,70mm Blues,and 70mm Reds(the reds survive,but are now 64mm),usually setup with Tracker risers,but a Rad-Pad would be up front if hill-bombing,or G.S. was the task.The bearings were Sims Gold Shields,or GMN 5s,untill I found Fafnirs,Oh,and a Power Pivot to protect the tail.Best damn board I ever had,and Kryptonics sponsored me on it!Some times the best things are free. "Golden Years" were '77-'80,then dark ages,then light again for '85-'87,and of course now dosen't suck so bad,either.

Regrets: I spent all my dollars on wine/women/song rather than stocking up on every piece of skate stuff I could get my hands on...

Hi,
Here is a drawing that I did of a Gullwing HPG IV kingpin. I measured one of my own, so the dimensions are accurate. Since these kingpins are very rare, a decent machinist could use this drawing to make accurate reproductions. 4140 or 4340 chrome-moly steel hardened and drawn to 45 HRC would be a good material choice.

I here ya Niel. I would not sell this little Sims board for fear of never finding another like it.
If someone was to offer me a grand for one of my old wide boards I don't think I would shed too many tears counting the money.
I agree the cost of these old boards are getting crazy... good if your a seller though. I'm too nostalgic to sell this stuff. I'll trade (I think thats a better skater to skater thing) or sell to a friend at times.
Better yet if I'm not too atached to something I'll give it to someone who needs it. (Just gave a friend a 70's slalom board to go with his mint set of split axle Gullwings. He would do the same for me.)
And as for style no one can argue longboards are full of style. Maybe thats why us old guys dig them so much. They come in every shape and design.
Most of the color paterns are cool and not some cartoon aliens or something. The ride more zen like....
Well unless you absorb a large bit of pavement like I did two weeks ago.
Can't say that was too zen like....
Still can't say I would see myself on a new shortboard anytime soon (if ever).
That would be why I'm posting in "Vintage pre-80's".

Shapes may be a little homoginous (err funtional)different sizes are actually still very different.31x7.25 < 34.0x9.25 quite a range actually,and that doesn't include mini's and longboards there are 6,7,8,9 ply costruction in different concaves that vary alot ,I beam ,Libtech vertical multilaminate,there are actually some aluminum boards out there some board with replacable nose and tail sections are on the horizon(good luck)if you include longboards variety increases greatly,it may not be a goofy ,hokey, off the wall variety ,but not all the same.

The Strokers went for $810.
Re: old school equipment. It had style, but it wasn't always functional. There's only so much you can do with board shape before it's non-functional. I sold off two classic vert boards I had (a K-beam and a Shogo) because they were worth more to me in cash than sentimental value, and I don't ride them anymore. The modern boards work better, I'd never skate vert without concave now. They're also cheaper! I pay the same price in 2000 dollars for a deck that I used to pay in 1985 dollars.
It's not that I don't like the old stuff - I do. But was that Airbeam construction significantly stronger or better than a good 7-ply maple laminate? The Shogo was way more stylish than modern vert boards, but functionally not as good. Also, the big $$$ I got for my busted Shogo buys a lot of new equipment.

Eric, I know exactly what you mean. The old stuff had style. I like the way the new ones ride though. I also have an old SIMS Superlight 10.0 with Tracker Extra Wide trucks
and old 70MM Red Kryptos. I ride this board some but when I put too much pressure on the tail I hear popping and cracking. I have had to glue the lamination back alot on this board. I also stripped this one down and cleaned it up and layered the urethane on it hopping to preserve it longer.

I did some homework and dug into some old magazines. It looks like Sims didn't start printing "taperkick" on the bottom until 78.
So it is a pre-78 at least. I will never sell this either.. I wanted a Sims laminated deck so bad when I was a kid but they were one of the most expensive decks going at that time.
$37.00 to a 14 year old was alot of yards to mow! I rode it last night and when I hopped off my wife asked me "well, what it feel like"
and the only response I could come up with was "A 25 year old board with an old guy on it". How things have changed. My G&S blacktip feels like a cadillac up against that old thing but the G&S lacks the power to take me back in time.
I admit to buying things on ebay from time to time if it catches my eye or is some odd part I need. I have yet to pay more than $80 for anything. I think if an old Dogtown board with a crack in it is worth $900 to ya and you have the money to through away, go for it.
I remember asking a friend of mine how much he thought something was worth and he answered "well that depends on what your willing to pay for it"
This stuff isn't too easy to find anymore but I think I could part with a set of Strokers for $1000 (heck, half that)
We were lucky to be into boarding in the 60's and 70's. I took my niece up to check out some boards at the local shop. Well other than all of the artwork they all looked like the same blanks (decks and wheels).
When we were young we had solid wood, ply, exotic woods, fiberglass, metal, plastic, graphite, foam core, narrow, wide, pig, single/double kick, wheels from many different places, tall, short, single/double conical, loose, sealed, and remember decks so pretty you couldn't put tape on them?
To some people these are art. We on the otherhand are just some old guys that like the way things were. I love these old boards because they bring back good memories when I ride them. If I run into one for sale cheap, I'll pick it up. I will not blow a grand for one, but maybe $100 and that's pushing it.

Weep weep weep,pour me pour me!:D what did those bad boys go for?,obviously any stuff like them on E bay is gonna be over priced,you'd have to find them at grandma's garage sale to get a normal (or rather, abnormal bargain)i think buying lottery tickets to be able to afford Strokers is probabely a better bet.By the way $1000.00 a pair for a new set Strokers, made by me, 50% up front and i guarentee they'll beat the hell out of the old ones,be matched to modern board sizes,tunable turning geometry,and a long delivery time,but you will get them.

I have the same board, so it is a SIMS
I bought mine around 76 it has ACS430 trucks and real wide SIMS PURE JUICE Wheels. I recently re-finished it and coated it with 6 coats of urethane. I know this takes away from the value but I don't plan on every selling it.

Size has nothing to do with weather its a taperkick,they started small 6.5 or so and undrilled maybe 75 or 76,and evolved, getting wider and wider ending right before the start of concave maybe 80,81 or so ,at about 10.0 inches wide.

Glad I ran across this site! Maybe someone here could help me out.
I found an old board I'm trying to date. It looks all original. I pulled the trucks off and the risors matched the deck perfect. Nice new wood under them.
It looks like a Sims taper kick but the size is wrong. It is the same lamination pattern w/wheel wells but it is only 7" wide X 30" long. It has the small Sims logo on top and the Large =Sims= Pure Juice logo on bottom.
Very nice alternating Light/Dark woods with no griptape on the deck. Not even drilled for a skid. The trucks are Tracker halftracks w/flat washers and perfect bushings. Inside the hanger under the bushing one is stamped 10 and the other 16(not sure what that means)
They both have the light grey 3/8" tracker risers. The wheels are multicolor Powerflex 5's with "Hoover"? 608 sealed bearings.
Stickers on the bottom of the deck are a round "Sims Pure Juice", 2 clear Tracker Trucks, and two small Powerflex stickers.
Any Ideas what year? I think maybe 76-77. Think it is an old Taperflex?

Far as I have seen first was the (Makaha) Bruce logan model. This was a small 27" all it said was Makaha with real small hand written letters Bruce logan model. This had wood screws in to the bottom of the deck. This had the real cheap Makaha trucks with makaha cheap wheels non clay. Then they had Makaha Logan earth ski. then the list goes on an on. I have sevral early variations of makaha skateboards metal wheels , then clay wheel, then the clay wheel board with plastic type material wheels, I should see Bruce Logan tomorrow at the ASR show I will pick his brain to see what he remembers ED
